Fly fishing is an angling method in which an artificial ‘fly’ is used to catch fish. The fly is cast using a fly rod, reel, and specialized weighted line. Casting a nearly weightless fly requires casting techniques significantly different from other forms of casting. Fly fishermen use hand tied flies that resemble natural insects and other food organisms, to entice the fish to strike. The off-season days are numbered.
The count down is on, Trout fishing season is at a near distance, right? It is a good time to check your fly fishing equipment, like cleaning the fly rod guides and the fly line, check your inventory of flies, leaders and accessories. While the Trout season in Ontario is relatively short. Private trout ponds have a longer fly fishing season. They are open in early April till end of October. Nothing better than to get a tune up on your casting technique and fish catching skill. Trout fishing ponds are usually not as crowded, and can offer you a quiet and peaceful surrounding that every fisher person looks for. There is no major hatch activity in early season. Most trout ponds have two major chironomid feeding periods each year. One of these periods is in the spring, from approximately the last week of March to the first week of June.
The second yearly chironomid emergence occurs in the fall, from as early as the last week in September to the first or second week in December.I have an early season fly patterns suggestion. Chironomids patterns in black, brown, red and green. Bloodworm, Hare’s Ear Nymph, Sawyer Nymph, Green Caddis Larva, San Juan Worm, Wooly Bugger, Pheasant Tail Nymph.Look forward to seeing you for my 2nd season at The Franklin Club.Tight line and good fishing!Michael Wong
