How to Choose the Right Fly Fishing Hook Size

If you’re new to fly fishing, there is a lot to learn! Getting a handle on the best fly fishing techniques takes time and practice, and so does picking out the right gear, including your fishing hook size.

To no surprise, one of the most important pieces of fishing tackle is your hook! Not only do you want to ensure you have the right type of hook picked out since it can mean the difference between a catch and a miss, but you also want to make sure it is the right size.

So, let’s go over how to choose the right fly fishing hook size so you can get over to the pristine waters of The Franklin Club for some top-notch fly fishing in Ontario!

But first thing’s first…

What Are Hook Sizes?

Hooks typically range in size from 1 to 32, and the higher the number, the smaller the hook. You will also need to match your hook to the size of the fly you are tying on – a smaller fly means a smaller hook.

Now, let’s move on to what will determine which hook size you choose.

Consider What Your Fish Are Eating

When you are deciding what size hook is best, you will want to take into account what the fish you are after are eating. After all, if you want a fish to bite, you have got to give it something appetizing and familiar.

Understanding what your fish are currently feeding on during the season will tell you what size hook is needed. If it is smaller prey like scuds or midge nymphs, you will want to opt for a smaller hook.

Ultimately, if your hook is oversized compared to your fly, it won’t look like the fish’s usual meal and they are unlikely to bite.

It doesn’t hurt to have a few different sizes of hooks on hand with similar-looking flies, though! If one size hook isn’t working, don’t hesitate to try another.

Don’t Overlook Behaviour and Environment

Fish, trout in particular, are easily startled, and the weather can play a big factor in their behaviour.

Sunny and warmer days can prompt the fish to change locations, while wind will affect the choppiness of the water, making the fish less likely to spook.

If you’re noticing the fish are particularly wary, select a small hook and fly, if they’re less flighty you can try for a slightly larger-sized hook.

Follow the Leader

The size of your leader, which attaches the fly to the line via a transparent material so as not to tip off the fish, will also determine the hook size you choose.

You will want to select a hook size that matches your leader size. The thicker your leader is, the larger the hook should be. Conversely, the smaller the leader size, the smaller the hook size.
